Carter hitting since call-up
Jodd Carter’s batting average is on the rise since the Cleveland Indians’ farmhand was promoted to Double A.
Carter, a 2014 Hilo High graduate and a 24th-round draft pick by the Indians that year, is batting .265 (13 for 49, .308 on-base percentage, .327 slugging) since being called up to the Akron RubberDucks. He swatted his first home run Aug. 18.
In 117 games with Single A Lynchburg this season, Carter batted .246 with 11 home runs, slugging .397 with a .334 OBP.
Akron finishes its season Sept. 3 and is contending for a playoff spot.
Hilo girls soccer meeting
The Hilo High girls soccer team will have a tryout registration meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday the Room C125 (near the library). A parent and a student are asked to attend.
If a student is unable to attend due to participating in a fall sport, her parent should attend.
The meeting will discuss the mandatory tryouts, September conditioning, November pre-season tournaments and the upcoming junior varsity and varsity season.
Each student-athlete is required to have a sports physical completed before the tryouts.
Soccer shoes, shin guards and running shoes are required for practices.

Waiakea seeks soccer coach
Waiakea High School is accepting applications for a girls soccer coach.
Applications can be picked up from the school’s main office during business hours.

45th Hilo Open this weekend
The 45th annual Hilo Open will be held at the Hilo Armory from Aug. 31-Sept. 1.
Organizers are expecting a variety of badminton participants from Oahu and the Big Island.
Registration divisions will include Open, A, B, C, D, single and mixed, junior, adult, and various senior levels in mens and womens divisions.
